Young Numismatist/Family Programs

In addition to Boy and Girl Scout clinics, there will also be a general public and youth and family activities table inside the show (sometimes known as the "WCC-PNNA Kid's Educational Zone") which will provide youth, families and non-collectors with free hobby information and educational materials.

Activities available, coordinated by ANA Past President Walter Ostromecki, will include:

  • FREE 10-stop youth Numismatic Treasure Hunt, for both Saturday and Sunday (all day during show hours).
  • "World Currency - Country Name Match Challenge Activity" where youth can win/earn examples of foreign currency and build a starter collection.
  • A feature recently developed by the ANA Education Department called "Treasures In Your Pocket (TIYP)," which introduces youth in a hands-on format to identify, learn about and keep various error coinage (mint errors) discovered in rolls of coins - such as clips, off center strikes, double dates, mintmark placements, etc. This program is sponsored by the error coin association called CONECA.
  • The current TIYP program also provides a U.S. currency component involving the high or low offset printing of the green serial number on 1976 $2 Bicentennial banknotes.
  • Youth who participate in the TIYP activity (it takes about an hour and parents can join in as well) will receive a free one-year ANA membership (with online version of The Numismatist magazine) valued at $15.

Fall Convention Info by Ed Fischer, General Chairman

Most of you will read this during and after the big coin show. This is because PNNA prints out this great newsletter for distribution free to anyone who attends. It is packed with information about local events, informative tidbits and the activities of PNNA. (Free copy of newsletter available at show.) Now to the message.

Greetings to my fellow numismatists in the northwest region of this great country. I would like to offer you a warm welcome to the annual Portland show brought to you by the Willamette Coin Club and Pacific Northwest Numismatic Association. It will be a chance for folks to gather with like minds and also to publicly honor WCC for their 30 years of existence.

Admission is still the same $2 that it has been for many years. If you ride the MAX and can show your receipt, admission is free. There is a fee for Early Bird admission.

Activities will include hourly door prizes, Boy Scout Merit Badge classes, Young Numismatist treasure hunt, exhibits and the cutting of the cake for the WCC 30-year celebration. 90+ local, regional and national dealers will be filling the bourse floor with all kinds of eye candy.

Hope to see you there. For additional questions, email me at, or call 503-507-6721.
