Young Numismatist/Family Programs

In addition to Boy and Girl Scout clinics, there will also be a general public and youth and family activities table inside the show (sometimes known as the "WCC-PNNA Kid's Educational Zone") which will provide youth, families and non-collectors with free hobby information and educational materials.

Activities available, coordinated by ANA Past President Walter Ostromecki, will include:

  • FREE 10-stop youth Numismatic Treasure Hunt, for both Saturday and Sunday (all day during show hours).
  • "World Currency - Country Name Match Challenge Activity" where youth can win/earn examples of foreign currency and build a starter collection.
  • A feature recently developed by the ANA Education Department called "Treasures In Your Pocket (TIYP)," which introduces youth in a hands-on format to identify, learn about and keep various error coinage (mint errors) discovered in rolls of coins - such as clips, off center strikes, double dates, mintmark placements, etc. This program is sponsored by the error coin association called CONECA.
  • The current TIYP program also provides a U.S. currency component involving the high or low offset printing of the green serial number on 1976 $2 Bicentennial banknotes.
  • Youth who participate in the TIYP activity (it takes about an hour and parents can join in as well) will receive a free one-year ANA membership (with online version of The Numismatist magazine) valued at $15.

Fall Convention Info by Ed Fischer, General Chairman

This message was for 2015. A new message will be posted when available.

This is a year that members of the PNNA should be proud of. We are part of a group that has a legacy of service, teaching and sharing. The Pacific Northwest Numismatic Association has been around for 75 years. The names that are associated with our group are huge in the national numismatic community. We are so blessed to have such a strong foundation.

The current Board of Directors and group of volunteers want to welcome you to another successfully hosted coin show in Portland. Portland has always been a gracious site for numismatics. Proven with the ANA National Money Show here last March. The fall show should display the constant growth through better exhibits, new dealer inventories and a 75th Anniversary celebration.

This year’s production of a 75th anniversary commemorative medal designed by famed engraver Tom Rogers, and a special invite to PNNA members to partake in refreshments, are part of the special celebration. Cake will be served. Ask the front table for directions to both parts of our celebration.

I am now in my first year as General Chairman and want to thank all the volunteers who have helped in a smooth transition. You know who you are. On that note, there are always opportunities to help the team produce the best event ever. It’s all done with your assistance.

Collecting coins has given me many hours of pleasure and I hope that shows in the passion I have towards sharing that joy. I work a small bit here and there to help the hobby grow. I am not alone as there are many in the Northwest with the same devotion. Come be a part of the passion, joy and education of numismatics. Everyone in the room is here to answer questions and share the adventure.
