PNNA Spring Convention Report - 2006
|
Friday April 21
The biggest annual coin show in the Pacific
Northwest, sponsored by the Pacific Northwest Numismatic Association (PNNA),
opened today at the Tukwila Community Center, with rainy weather in the morning
turning to fair weather later in the day. Attendance was high for a Friday
– perhaps reflecting the current strong coin
market with silver and gold at their highest levels in about 25 years.
Saturday April 22
The PNNA convention was in full swing on
Saturday with excellent turnout on the bourse floor combined with a full day of
educational programs and meetings. Even the warm sunny weather experienced on
Saturday and Sunday couldn't keep serious collectors away!
-
Dr. Richard Doty, curator of coins at the Smithsonian, delivered
the keynote address, Taking Treasures on the Road: The
Smithsonian’s BACK. His article on this subject also appears in
The Nor'wester.
-
Juniors on the bourse floor were excited to have
the opportunity to complete a set of numismatic items as part of the
Young Numismatist (YN) "Treasure Trivia" game. Participation was excellent (over 100) again this year!
-
Phil Lockwood from the Willamette Coin Club was announced as the winner of the
Nina Nystrom Memorial Goodwill Ambassador Award
by PNNA president Larry Gaye, and Larry Gaye himself was surprised and pleased
to receive the Bob Everett Memorial Award.
-
Winners of the judged collector exhibits
were announced. There were six competitive exhibits this year, plus Joe
Boling's non-competitive "Roadkill" display!

Sunday April 23
The highly successful 2006 PNNA convention concluded
today in Tukwila, with fairly good attendance even with the weather turned warm
and sunny (three years in a row!). Total convention paid attendance
was the highest in several years, and just about everyone seemed to be satisfied. The PNNA
was pleased to announce that the association's annual convention would again be held
at the Tukwila Community Center the weekend of April 13-15, 2007.
PNNA 2006 Token Design
The PNNA was pleased to once again offer custom designed and
struck “tokens” for its annual convention in Tukwila, Washington, April 21-23, 2006.
The following token sets were available on a pre-order basis:
Four-token set (gold, silver, copper and pewter) for $100.00
Three-token set (silver, copper and pewter) for $15.00.
Both versions were housed in Airtite holders and collector boxes. Pewter
strikes were given to collectors attending the show, with paid admission.
