PNNA Spring Convention Report - 2002

Friday May 3

The biggest annual coin show in the Pacific Northwest, sponsored by the Pacific Northwest Numismatic Association (PNNA), opened today at the Tukwila Community Center, near Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and just a short distance south of Seattle. Convention chairman Dick Billings reported that "It's going very well" with "excellent attendance." As was the case last year, everyone seemed to be pleased with the facility, was has been nicely decorated including carpeting over the entire gymnasium floor. Reflecting a continuing strong coin market, there is a large dealer turnout with a good variety of material available.

Saturday May 4

The PNNA convention moved into high gear on Saturday with excellent turnout on the bourse floor combined with a full day of educational programs and meetings.

  • The keynote address, 50 Years of Collecting and Communicating, was given by Cliff Mishler from Krause Publications. A number of us were fortunate enough to receive a copy of Pioneer Publisher - The story of Krause Publications' first 50 years. The first edition of Numismatic News was published in October of 1952, and it's still going strong today!

  • This was followed in short order by ANA president John Wilson and his wife Nancy speaking about 53 Rare Pieces of Paper Money and Related Items, complete with photographic slides. The number 53 was chosen to match the PNNA's 53rd convention! Many unusual and rarely seen items were shown.

  • Juniors on the bourse floor were excited to have the opportunity to complete a set of 13 numismatic items as part of the Young numismatist (YN) scavenger hunt. Participation was excellent!

  • Convention general chairman Dick Billings received the Nina Nystrom Memorial Goodwill Ambassador Award from PNNA president Scott Loos.

  • Scott and Lisa Loos received the ANA Presidential Award from ANA president John Wilson for their outstanding work promoting numismatics in the Pacific Northwest.

  • Del Cushing received the Bob Everett Memorial Award in recognition of Del's long years of service to the hobby.

Company founder Chet Krause, now 78 years old, was unable to attend but sends his best regards to all of us here in the Northwest.

Sunday May 5

The highly successful 2002 PNNA convention concluded today in Tukwila. Attendance was good for a Sunday, and the overall attendance was the highest at a PNNA convention in several years. There were very few complaints from either dealers or the collectors and public attending the event. The PNNA was pleased to announce that the association's annual conventions would again be held at the Tukwila Community Center in 2003 and 2004. To avoid a conflict with another major regional convention, the dates of the PNNA convention will be moved to the last weekend in April.

See the letter from ANA president John Wilson and his wife Nancy.
