4th Quarter 2005

The Puyallup Fair – The PNNA again sponsored a coin collecting table and exhibit at the Puyallup Fair, 9-25 September 2005. The following Puget Sound clubs volunteered to sponsor one or more days of the fair by staffing the table: Boeing Employees Coin Club, Olympia Coin Club, Seattle Numismatic Society and Tacoma-Lakewood Coin Club. Thank you to all of the clubs and individuals who assisted.

2006 PNNA Convention – After another successful convention in Tukwila in April, the PNNA will hold its 2006 convention in the same facility on the weekend of 21-23 April 2006. Dick Billings will again serve as general chairman for 2006. Dealers who wish to receive a bourse application should contact Scott Loos at PO Box 2210, North Bend, WA 98045, phone 425-831-8789.

Washington Quarter Design Update – The Washington State quarter will be released in 2007. The state accepted short essays with design suggestions up to July 31. The U.S. Mint will create designs from the winning entries (maximum of 5), and the final selection process will take place in April of 2006. See the state’s website at www.governor.wa.gov/quarter/ for more information.

Boling’s Ride for Multiple Sclerosis – PNNA secretary/treasurer Joe Boling was able to collect about $1,400+ in pledges from those who supported his bicycle ride to benefit the National MS Society (in honor of longtime PNNA stalwart Marge Farnam). Many of those pledgers were PNNA members – thank you to all who assisted.

3rd Quarter 2005

Oregon Quarter Release – The Oregon Quarter, with a design featuring Crater Lake, was released on June 15. See Larry Gaye’s President’s Message.

Bob Everett Memorial Award – The 2005 recipient of the Bob Everett award is Joseph Boling, who received a check for $200 and has had his name engraved on the perpetual plaque that is maintained by the PNNA. Joe has contributed to the PNNA in many ways over the years, including service as secretary/treasurer, exhibit chief judge and Puyallup Fair coordinator. He received the award at the PNNA convention. Congratulations to Joe!

Nina Nystrom Numismatic Ambassador Award – The 2005 recipients of the Nina Nystrom award are Lisa and Scott Loos, who have supported not only the PNNA, but also the ANA as national coordinators for the past two years.

PNNA Memorabilia Catalog Updated – The PNNA memorabilia catalog has been updated to include the custom designed and struck “tokens” for this years’ annual convention (Tukwila, Washington, April 29-30 and May 1, 2005), as well as other recent discoveries such as a 1965-dated magnifier issued for the Yakima Convention in May of that year.

Greg Franck-Weiby, who has designed and struck the PNNA convention “tokens” for the past three years, wrote an interesting article about the designs that can be viewed from a link on the catalog page (see above).

2nd Quarter 2005

PNNA Scholarships Awarded for 2005 – Many thanks to all those who submitted applications for the 2005 PNNA Scholarship Program. Two full scholarships (one adult and one YN) will be awarded to the 2005 ANA Summer Seminar in Colorado Springs, CO. Scholarships include tuition, room/board and airfare up to a total of $1,000 per scholarship. We were pleased to receive several applications this year and the committee had a difficult time choosing the winners from so many deserving applicants. We are pleased to announce that the winners of this year’s scholarship program are Matthew Crane (YN) and Janna Silverstein (Adult). Matthew is 13 years old and has a goal of collecting a coin from every modern country in the world (he is 2/3 of the way there) and has recently developed an interest in ancient coins. He has been studying Latin for 2 1/2 years and has moved from the grammar to working on texts of Cicero and Vergil, which will come in handy when he takes the Ancient Roman Coinage course. Janna began in the hobby by collecting elongated cents and has expanded into collecting U.S. type coins. She will be taking either the Collecting U.S. Type Coins or United States Tokens class. I would like to thank all of the applicants this year and encourage all of you to consider applying for the 2006 PNNA Scholarships.

See reports on the ANA Summer Seminar by the two scholarship winners.

PNNA/Willamette Coin Club 1st Annual Fall Convention and Coin Show – The PNNA/WCC are pleased to announce the addition of a second regional convention/coin show in our area each year. The new show will take place the weekend of October 28-30, 2005 at the DoubleTree Lloyd Center hotel in Portland, OR. The fall show will have many of the same features as our spring convention – an outstanding bourse of local, regional, and national dealers; a numismatic theater; a YN program; and an exhibit area. To date, 84 total tables have been sold/reserved and we have room for several more as demand increases. This should be a great event for the region!!
